Launching Students into STEM Careers through Video Game Design

At The Barrett School, we’re always seeking innovative ways to engage our students and prepare them for the future. Today, we’re excited to announce our newest program: the STEM Forged Game Design Program. This unique curriculum blends the excitement of video game creation with the rigorous demands of STEM education, providing students with a thrilling pathway to develop essential skills for their futures.

A Journey into Game Design

Imagine walking into a classroom where the buzz of creativity and curiosity is palpable. Students are huddled around computers, sketching out ideas, coding algorithms, and testing their creations. This is the vibrant atmosphere we aim to cultivate with our STEM Forged Game Design Program. This program takes students on a journey through the multifaceted world of video game design, merging artistic expression with technological prowess.

The Artistic and Creative Side

At the heart of game design is creativity. Students begin their journey by diving into 2D and 3D design, learning to create captivating game characters, intricate worlds, and engaging levels. They explore the fundamentals of animation, bringing their creations to life with movement and personality. This artistic aspect of game design allows students to express themselves in new and exciting ways, encouraging them to think outside the box and push the boundaries of their imagination.

In the classroom, students might start with simple sketches, brainstorming characters and storylines. These ideas then evolve into detailed designs using sophisticated software tools. They learn to create textures, shapes, and environments that are not only visually appealing but also functional within the game world. This process teaches them the importance of aesthetics, storytelling, and user experience.

The Technical and Scientific Side

While the artistic side sparks creativity, the technical side of game design ignites curiosity and problem-solving. Students delve into programming, learning to write code that controls everything from character movements to game mechanics. They tackle complex algorithms, data structures, and physics simulations, gaining a deep understanding of how games operate under the hood.

For instance, students might write scripts that dictate how a character jumps or interacts with the environment. They learn about collision detection, game loops, and event handling, skills that are essential not only in game design but in many other fields of computer science and engineering. Through project-based learning, they also master project management skills, coordinating and overseeing their game projects from conception to completion.

Integrated Learning

One of the most exciting aspects of the STEM Forged Game Design Program is its integration into the broader school curriculum. Imagine a math class where students use game design principles to explore geometry and algebra. By coding the movement of game characters, they learn about vectors, coordinates, and equations in a hands-on and engaging way. In art class, they might study color theory and composition, applying these principles to their game designs.

After School and Beyond

The learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends. Our after-school programs and camps offer students additional opportunities to hone their skills and collaborate on larger projects. These settings provide a more relaxed environment where students can explore their interests more deeply, whether it’s perfecting their animation techniques or developing complex game levels.

Remote learning options also ensure that students can continue their education no matter where they are. Our program is fully compatible with Chromebooks, Windows, and macOS devices, making it accessible to all students. With remote instructors and IT support, students have all the resources they need to succeed.

The Path Ahead

The STEM Forged Game Design Program is more than just a course; it’s a launch pad for future careers in STEM fields. By the end of the program, students will have a portfolio of completed games, showcasing their skills in programming, design, and project management. These experiences prepare them for a wide range of careers, from game development and software engineering to digital art and animation.
