We are thrilled to announce that The Barrett School has successfully completed its Cognia Candidacy Review, marking a major milestone in our journey toward full accreditation and affirming our deep commitment to continuous improvement and educational excellence.
What Is the Cognia Candidacy Review?
Cognia accreditation is not a one-time event—it is a continuous improvement process grounded in rigorous, research-based performance standards. The Candidacy Review evaluates a school’s capacity to meet these standards, examining the whole institution: academic programs, leadership practices, school culture, community engagement, and organizational systems.
During this process, Cognia representatives conducted a comprehensive review of our Candidacy Diagnostic, examined evidence aligned to the Cognia Performance Standards, and gathered first-hand data through classroom observations, stakeholder meetings, leadership interviews, and a full campus tour.
Why Cognia Matters — And Why This Is Rare
Cognia is widely recognized as the largest and most respected accreditation organization in the world, serving over 40,000 schools and educational institutions across more than 85 countries. Its standards are research-based, globally benchmarked, and continuously refined to reflect best practices in education.
Earning Cognia Candidacy is both rare and rigorous, particularly for young, independent schools. In fact, The Barrett School is one of only two schools in the Florida Panhandle—alongside Seaside—to achieve Cognia candidacy, placing us in a very small and distinguished group of institutions recognized for meeting international standards of educational quality and organizational excellence.
For a school that has been in operation for just two years, reaching this milestone speaks not only to our vision, but to the strength of our execution, leadership, and community alignment.

Highlights from Our Review
The Candidacy Review for The Barrett School began on December 18, 2025, and included:
Classroom visits and direct observations of teaching and learning
In-depth conversations with school leadership
Stakeholder discussions and standards ratings
Verification of policies, procedures, and assurances
A review of data collection practices and evidence systems
The review concluded with affirming feedback and clear guidance for next steps as we continue toward full Cognia accreditation.
Strengths Recognized Across All Key Characteristics
Cognia confirmed that The Barrett School demonstrates the capacity to meet all Cognia Performance Standards, with notable strengths across each of the four key characteristics:
Culture of Learning
Our play-based, student-centered approach—blending joyful exploration with strong academics—was recognized as a defining strength. From early childhood through upper school, students engage in hands-on, interest-driven learning that builds curiosity, creativity, confidence, and critical thinking. Integrated STEM and STEAM instruction, outdoor education, and real-world problem-solving are central to our learning environment.
Leadership for Learning
The review affirmed our shared leadership model, where administrators, teachers, families, and community members collaborate in shaping the school’s direction. Leadership practices were described as intentional, forward-thinking, and responsive. Teachers are empowered to lead instructional initiatives, mentor peers, and actively participate in decision-making, fostering a culture of collective responsibility and professional growth.
Engagement of Learning
Instruction across all grade levels was recognized as learner-centered, collaborative, and developmentally appropriate. Students are active participants in their education, with meaningful opportunities for voice, choice, leadership, and self-expression. Student work is celebrated throughout the school, reinforcing confidence, ownership, and pride in learning.
Growth in Learning
Cognia acknowledged our systematic, evidence-informed approach to supporting student growth. Multiple measures—including formative and summative assessments, authentic STEM projects, and reflective goal-setting—are used to guide instruction and improvement efforts. The school’s responsiveness, such as expanding STEM offerings and implementing targeted literacy supports, reflects a strong culture of continuous improvement.

Outcome of the Candidacy Review
Based on the review of evidence, classroom observations, stakeholder interviews, and verification of all required assurances, Cognia determined that The Barrett School demonstrates the capacity to meet the Cognia Performance Standards and approved the school as a Candidate for Accreditation.
While the Candidacy Review does not assign a single numerical average, overall findings across all standards reflected strong alignment with Cognia’s expectations for quality, leadership, engagement, and growth in learning.
What makes this outcome especially meaningful is the unprecedented timeline in which it was accomplished. As a school in operation for just two years, The Barrett School reached candidacy status through focused collaboration, clarity of vision, and unwavering dedication—an achievement that often takes schools many years to attain.
We are immensely proud of our staff and leadership team, whose professionalism, commitment, and shared ownership of excellence made this milestone possible. Their willingness to reflect deeply, innovate boldly, document practices, and engage fully in the accreditation process speaks volumes about the strength of our school community and the foundation we are building for long-term success.
All Assurances Successfully Met
The evaluator verified that all Cognia Assurances were fully met, including compliance with:
Governmental laws and regulations
Ethical governance and decision-making
Financial audits and fiscal responsibility
Safety, security, crisis, and health management plans
Transparent and ethical marketing and communication practices
This confirmation reflects the strength of our organizational infrastructure and our commitment to responsible, ethical school operations.

What’s Next?
Our next step is to complete the Accreditation Engagement Review training with Cognia, after which the formal Engagement Review will be scheduled. Cognia representatives have expressed their continued support as we move forward in this process.
A Shared Accomplishment
This milestone belongs to our entire community—students, teachers, staff, families, and leadership—whose shared belief in meaningful, joyful, and future-focused education made this achievement possible.
We are proud of how far we’ve come, energized by what lies ahead, and deeply committed to growing with purpose—locally rooted, globally aligned.
Thank you for being part of The Barrett School journey.
